Diabetes mellitus:
Diabetes mellitus is a non-communicable metabolic disease, developed due to the malfunctioning of beta cells of Islets of Langerhans present in the pancreas which secretes insulin.
Role of insulin:
Insulin regulates the synthesis of glycogen from the excess glucose present in the blood.
When these cells fail to produce insulin in sufficient quantity, the level of sugar in the blood rises tremendously and is passed out in the urine. This is known as diabetes mellitus.
Food to avoid in diabetes mellitus:
People are advised to avoid food rich in starch and sugar because due to lack of insulin, neither it will convert to glycogen nor will it be stored in the liver rather it will pass through the urine.
