Question

Diameter of a circle is $$26$$ cm and length of a chord of the circle is $$24$$ cm. find the distance of the chord from the centre.


Solution

R.E.F image 
Given diameter of circle = 26 cm 
diameter =2r = 26 cm 
radius = 13 cm 
length of chord of circle = 24 cm 
Given OA = 13 cm 
$$ AC = \frac{AB}{2} = 12 cm $$
$$ \therefore OC = \sqrt{OA^{2}-AC^{2}} $$ (By Pythagoras theorem)
$$ = \sqrt{(13)^{2}-(12)^{2}} $$
$$ = \sqrt{169-144} $$
$$ = \sqrt{25} = 5 cm $$
