Diamond is the hardest allotrope of carbon. Give reason for its hardness?

There are 2 well known allotropes of carbon that is diamond and graphite. In diamond, each carbon atom is bonded to four other carbon atoms forming a rigid three dimensional structure of tetrahedral shape. This makes diamond hard & rigid.
