Ampulla is present at the base of the semicircular canals.Ampulla has sensory patch called crista which has hair cells and the hair are embedded in a gelatinous sheath.It is a sensory organ of rotation.When the body is rotating, it helps in maintaining the balancec.

Utircle and saccule has sensory patch called macula.The hair in macula are in a gelatinous sheath which also has calcium carbonate crystals called otoliths.The macula is for maintaining the static equilibrium which means when the body is not moving or rotating.
