Question

Differentiate between denaturation and renaturation of proteins.

Open in App
Solution

Denaturation is disruption of the forces which hold 3-dimensional shape of a protein molecule. It usually refers to the loss of natural properties of a protein molecule or in other words it is the loss of its biologic activity. Denaturation leads to unfolding of the peptide chain, thus causing disorganization of the internal structure of protein. Renaturation is sometimes reversible as by placing back into the physiological conditions, the bonds can still appear and restore its original conformation.
