Lysosomes are membrane-bounded vesicles that contain hydrolytic enzymes for digesting macromolecules, whereas peroxisomes are also small, spherical, membrane-bound bodies but they contain enzymes, in particular catalase, which breaks down the highly toxic cellular byproduct hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen, thereby preventing the cell being poisoned.
