Question

Differentiate between top senescence and progressive senescence.

Open in App
Solution

The terminal irreversible phase of ageing is called senescence. In top senescence the above ground part of the shoot dies each year after flowering and fruiting, but the underground part survives which puts out new shoots again next year, whereas in progressive senescence, the oldest leaves senescence and die first. The senescence then moves from leaves to the stem to underground parts.
