Electronegativity is a measure of the attraction of an atom for the electrons in a chemical bond. In a group, the electronegativity decreases as atomic number increases, as a result of increased distance between thevalence electron and nucleus.
Dipole moments occur when there is a separation of charge. They can occur between two ions in an ionic bond or between atoms in a covalent bond. Dipole moments arise from differences in electronegativity. The larger the difference in electronegativity, the larger the dipole moment.
Hence Dipole moment is proportional to the electronegativity of the central atom. So it decreases down the group as electronegativity also decreases.
