Question

Discuss in detail the decline of the population of wild beast in India under colonial period

Open in App
Solution

The colonial period in India saw sharp reductions in the population of wild animals. This was due to two reasons.

1. The commercial exploitation of forests which led to the destruction of habitat of many wild animals.
2. Rampant hunting by the British and the members of the royal families of princely states.

As a result of these two factors, several species of wild animals like lions and tigers were pushed to the brink of extinction.
