Solution

Instructions:

This is a 5 marks question. There should be at least 5 points here. Discuss how changing cityscapes can be captured in maps. Talk about the Survey of India in this context as well. Discuss drawings by bringing in architecture of buildings or development of areas. Bring in the example of the Mumbai port’s development over time.

Solution:
  • Changing nature of cityscapes or any particular location can be traced through maps.
  • In fact, the Survey of India, was established during the British Raj to create various maps of Indian cities, provinces etc. through scientific methods of survey.
  • The drawn out plans designed by architects are important when studying the architecture of a building as well as phases of the development process of a particular area.
  • For example, the original plan of the Bombay Port is in the possession of the Department of Mumbai Port Trust.
  • The development of the Port and even the city as a whole can be understood through the plans drawn and drafted by architects and engineers.
