The Maurya and Gupta periods made remarkable contributions to Indian architecture.

Maurya period:
  • Emperor Ashoka erected several stone pillars across his empire which are excellent specimens of Indian sculpture.
  • Sanchi stupa and cave sculptures at Udayagiri, Karla, Nasik, and Ajanta depict the architectural developments of the period.
Gupta period
  • The art of image-making developed during the Gupta period.
  • The major contribution of the period is the iron pillar at Mehrauli near Delhi. It demonstrates the progress in the metallurgical knowledge of ancient Indians.​
