Question

Discuss the factors on which the amount of expansion depends when a solid is heated.

Open in App
Solution

The factors on which the expansion depends when a solid is heated are:

1. Temperature:

1.1 Temperature plays a major role in the expansion of solids.

1.2 The solid which is heated at a higher temperature expands more compared to the solids heated at lower temperatures.

2. Size of solid:

2.1 The length, area, and volume of the solid are also important when considering expansion.

2.2 A solid of a smaller length expands lesser compared to that which is of a larger length.

3. Material of solid:

3.1 The type of material is also important when considering the expansion of solids. Based on the nature of the material the expansion of solids varies.

3.2 For example, when heated copper expands more when compared to iron.

Hence, the expansion of the solid depends on Temperature, Size of solid, and Material of the Solid.
