Law-making at the state level:
  • The State Legislative Assembly is the primary law-making body at the state level.
  • It consists of all the Members of the Legislative Assembly from the state, who meet to formulate laws for the people of the state.
Functions of the State Legislative Assembly:
  • Its primary function is to make laws for the subjects mentioned in the state list. Additionally, it controls the finances of the state. No expenditure of public money or introduction of new taxes can be done by the state government without its approval.
  • It also keeps a check on the Executive.
  • The Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers remain in power only as long as they enjoy a majority in the Assembly.
  • The members of the Assembly raise various issues and demands of the people and ask relevant questions to the Chief Minister and the ministers.
  • The elected members of the State Legislative Assembly also vote in the Presidential elections, Rajya Sabha elections, and State Legislative Council elections.
  • Legislative Assemblies also play an important role in approving Constitutional Amendment Bills.
