Scientific forestry was regarded as important in colonial times as it enabled the colonial governments to exploit the resources of a forest commercially. Under scientific forestry, the natural vegetation of a forest is destroyed and replaced with some common species of forest that has commercial value. The concept, however, is discredited today and is no longer in favour.
