Weed

A Weed is an unwanted wild plant that grows in competition with cultivated plants.

Various methods for weed control are:

1. Preventive weed control: It prevents weeds from being established in a field by using certified weed-free seed and cleaned equipment.
2. Cultural weed control: In this, we maintain the field condition in such a manner that it is less suitable for weed growth, e.g. Crop rotation.
3. Mechanical weed control: It involves the use of farm equipment to control weeds , e.g. Tillage and mowing.
4. Biological weed control: It involves the use of natural enemies (insects) of weed plants to control the germination of weed seeds, e.g. Cinnabar moth to control tansy ragwort.
5. Chemical weed control - It involves the use of chemicals (herbicides) on weeds or soil to control the germination or growth of the weed, e.g. 2,4-DB or 4- (2,4-dichloro phenoxy) butyric acid.
