Question

Discuss with an example how hybridization is used for developing new varieties of crops with desired characteristics?

Open in App
Solution

Hybridization:

Hybridization is a method of obtaining a new variety of desirable traits by crossbreeding two different varieties of crops.

Example: If plant A has the character of drought resistance and plant B has a character of pest resistance, then crossbreeding of the two plants or hybridization can produce plants with both the desirable characters.

The selection of plant offspring from the hybridization is important to get those plants with both resistant characters.

Common examples of plants: A hybrid of sorghum and sudangrass shows the presence of an intermediate level of prussic acid for pest resistance but it does not affect the other organisms.
