Question

“Dissolution of quick lime in water is an exothermic reaction.” Explain.

Solution

An Exothermic reaction is a chemical reaction that involves the release of energy in the form of heat or light.

This can be expressed in a chemical equation as follows:

Reactants → Products + Energy

  • When quick lime(Calcium oxide) is dissolved in water it forms slaked lime(Calcium hydroxide).
  • This process is highly exothermic as a lot of heat is produced, this heat raises the temperature due to which mixture becomes very hot.
  • If this process is formed in a plastic bucket it tends to melt.

Hence, it is an example of an exothermic process.

CaO(s)Quicklime+H2O(l)WaterCa(OH)2(s)+Slakedlime
