The melting point of alumina is around 2000 degree Celsius which is too high. To solve this, the alumina is dissolved in a material called cryolite. The resulting mixture’s melting point is 1000 degree celsius. The mixture can then be used as an electrolyte. The smelter containing the electrolyte is supplied with 18,600 Kilowatt hours of electricity per tonne of ore. The end of this elaborate process results in molten aluminium. It can then be cooled and shaped as per the requirement.
