(i) Iron(II) sulphate and iron (III) sulphate (using ammonium hydroxide).

Solution

Reaction with iron(III) sulphate:

  • When ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) is treated with iron(III) sulphate solution (Fe2(SO4)3), it produces a reddish brown precipitate of ferric hydroxide (Fe(OH)3), which is insoluble in excess of NH4OH.
  • Fe2(SO4)3(aq)+3NH4OH(aq)Fe(OH)3(s)+3(NH4)2SO4(aq)

Reaction with iron(II) sulphate:

  • Ammonium hydroxide reacts with iron(II) sulphate (FeSO4) solution to form a dirty green colored precipitate of Fe(OH)2, which is insoluble in excess of ammonium hydroxide.
  • FeSO4(aq)+2NH4OH(aq)Fe(OH)2(s)+NH42SO4(aq)
