Question

Do alkali metals conduct electricity?

Open in App
Solution

Why do metals conduct electricity?

  1. According to the definition of electricity, it is a phenomenon associated with freely moving charges in between atoms.
  2. Generally, all the metals have free electrons which can be released easily.
  3. Due to this, the released electrons move freely in between the atoms and thus conduct electricity.
  4. As alkali metals are larger and have only one electron in their outermost shells, they lose the electrons and become cations easily.

Hence, like other metals, Alkali metals also conduct electricity.
