Do aquatic plants have stomata?

Open in App
Solution

Stomata:

  1. Stomata are pores found in the epidermis of leaves that are responsible for the gaseous exchange in a plant.
  2. These stomatal pores allow the plant to intake carbon dioxide gas and release oxygen during photosynthesis.

Aquatic plants:

  1. Plants that have adapted to live in freshwater or saltwater are called aquatic plants.
  2. These plants are also called hydrophytes and are of three types- floating, emergents and submerged.
  3. Lotus, water lily, hyacinth, Hydrilla etc. are some examples of aquatic plants.
  4. Aquatic plants have stomata on the upper side or upper epidermis of the leaves except for submerged plants.
  5. This type of permanently opened stomata is present in floating and emergent plants like water hyacinth, duckweed, water primrose, bog moss etc.
  6. Submerged plants do not have stomata and they absorb nutrients and gases directly through the water surface.
