Question

Do bacteria survive in the antibiotic-containing medium?

Open in App
Solution

Antibiotics:

  1. They are antimicrobial drugs obtained from other organisms (fungi, moulds, bacteria) to combat harmful microorganisms.
  2. Genes responsible for antibiotic production are naturally present in the plasmids of bacteria.
  3. However, they can also be produced on a large scale using fermentation (cultivating microorganisms in large tanks under controlled conditions).
  4. They are used to prevent infections caused by microorganisms.
  5. Example- streptomycin, penicillin, etc.
  6. Usually, bacteria cannot survive in the antibiotic-containing medium.
  7. However, if some bacteria can develop resistance to the antibiotic, they can survive and grow even in the medium with antibiotics.
  8. Examples of antibiotic-resistant bacteria- Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and MDR-TB( Multi-drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis).
