It catalyzes the addition of CO₂ to PEP and converts it to oxaloacetic acid (OAA), the 4C acid.
It is present in C₄ plants in the mesophyll cells.
PEP case is also present in the C₃ plants.
But in C_3,it is not involved in carbon fixation.
However, it produces Oxaloacetate to replenish citric acid cycle intermediates.
