Question

Do both C3 and C4 have PEP cases?

Open in App
Solution

PEP (phosphoenolpyruvate) case:

  1. It catalyzes the addition of CO2 to PEP and converts it to oxaloacetic acid (OAA), the 4C acid.
  2. It is present in C4 plants in the mesophyll cells.
  3. PEP case is also present in the C3 plants.
  4. But in C3, it is not involved in carbon fixation.
  5. However, it produces Oxaloacetate to replenish citric acid cycle intermediates.
