Question

Do gymnosperms have archegonia and antheridia?

Open in App
Solution

Antheridia and Archegonia:

  1. It is a male sex organ that produces male gametes known as antherozoids or spermatozoa.
  2. The female sex organ, the archegonia, produces female gametes.
  3. Archegonia but no antheridia are found in gymnosperms.
  4. Plants in this division are heterosporous.
  5. While the male gametophyte is produced by microspores or pollen grains, the female gametophyte is produced by a single megaspore within the megasporangium (nucellus), which contains two or more archegonia, or female sex-organs.
