Question

Do Halogens React With Water?

Open in App
Solution

Halogens- In periodic table, Group 17 elements are known as Halogens( Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine, Astatine, Tennessee ). They have seven valence electron in their outermost shell. Due to seven valence electrons, these elements are electronegative and highly reactive.

Halogens reactivity with water - On moving downwards in Halogens group, the reactivity decreases. Fluorine and Chlorine react with water but Bromine and Iodine are sparingly soluble in water. The reduction potential of Bromine and Iodine is small, thus they do not oxidize water.

Reaction involved when Fluorine and Chlorine react with water-

  • When Fluorine react with water vapors, it oxidizes to forms Oxygen and Ozone:

2F2(g)+2H2O(g)4HF(g)+O2(g)

3F2(g)+2H2O(g)6HF(g)+O3(g)

  • When Chlorine react with water, it forms Hydrochloric acid and Hypochlorous acid

Cl2(g)+2H2O(aq)HCl(aq)+HOCl(aq)

Yes, Some of the Halogens react with water.
