Is hippopotamus milk pink in color?

Open in App
Solution

Hippopotamus:

  1. It is also known as hippo or river hippopotamus, which is a large semiaquatic mammal generally found in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  2. The milk produced by hippo females is pink in color.
  3. This is because two distinct kinds of acids are produced by them.
  4. These acids are norhipposudoric acid and hipposudoric acid.
  5. The former is orange in color, while the latter is red and also called blood sweat.
  6. Both these acids function as sunscreen for hippos, thus safeguarding them from ultraviolet rays.
  7. The lactating hippo will discharge milk, which is white in color, however, with the combination of the mentioned acids, the milk appears pink in color.
