Question

Does a pendulum swing faster with more weight?

Open in App
Solution

Explanation

  1. The time period T of a simple pendulum depends only on the length L of the pendulum and the gravity g that is T=2πLg. Thus the time period doesn’t depend on mass.
  2. Since the time period is not dependent on mass thus an increase in the weight of the bob will not affect the swing rate.
  3. The pendulum does not swing faster when the weight of the bob is increased.
  4. When the weight of the object is increased gravity will just pull harder, this evens out the extra weight added to the string.

Hence, the pendulum does not swing faster with more weight.
