Question

Does ANP increase or decrease blood pressure?

Open in App
Solution

Atrial Natriuretic peptide (ANP):

  1. The atrial natriuretic peptide is a hormone that exerts a vasodilator effect on the kidneys and reduces the rate of tubular absorption of sodium.
  2. ANP lowers the blood pressure once it enters the bloodstream by inducing blood vessel dilation and the excretion of sodium via urine.
  3. It increases the excretion of urinary sodium by inhibiting sodium reabsorption across the inner medullary collecting duct.
  4. ANP stimulates diuresis and natriuresis by causing the afferent arteriole to vasodilate and contracts the efferent arteriole.
