Question

Does aqua (H2O) come under strong field ligand or weak field ligand according To VBT Theory?

Open in App
Solution

Spectrochemical series: Spectrochemical series is the arrangement of ligands in the decreasing order of the strength of ligands.

Weak field ligands: Weak field ligands are those ligands that can not pair the valence electrons of a metal ion.

Normally, Aqua(H2O) is considered a weak field ligand. But in the case of the metal ion having an oxidation state +3 or higher than +3 and transition metals of 4d and 5d series, H2O acts as a strong ligand.
