Question

Does dry HCl gas turn blue litmus to red?

Open in App
Solution

Dry hydrochloric acid (HCl) gas:

  1. HCl (Hydrochloric Acid) gas does not produce H+ ions in its gaseous or dry state.
  2. It has no acidic properties.
  3. Dry HCl gas does not contain H+ ions.
  4. It is only in the aqueous solution that an acid dissociates to give ions.

Reason to not turn blue litmus to red by dry HCl:

  1. Since in this case, neither HCl is in the aqueous form nor the litmus paper is wet, therefore, the color of the litmus paper does not change.
