Question

Does glycolysis produce 2 ATP or 4 ATP?

Open in App
Solution

Glycolysis

  1. The process by which cells of our body break down glucose to release energy is known as glycolysis.
  2. Energy is released in the form of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) once the glucose is broken down into pyruvate.
  3. When 1,3-bisphosphoglyceric acid is transformed to 3-phosphoglyceric acid, and phosphoenolpyruvate is converted to pyruvic acid, ATP is generated.
  4. These steps are repeated two times, once for each triose phosphate, yielding a total of four ATP molecules.
  5. Therefore, the process of glycolysis produces a total of 4 ATP.
