Question

Does oxygen have high ionization energy?

Open in App
Solution

  • Ionization energy is the minimum amount of energy required when their is a removal of electron from isolated gseous atom.
  • No, oxygen does not have high ionization energy. This is due to an electron being added to an already half full orbital in oxygen, which results in electron electron repulsion , which will lower the ionization energy.
  • Electronic configuration of O(atomic no.-8) is: 1s22s22p4
  • The first ionization energy of oxygen is 13.6181eV
