Question

Does starch solution show Tyndall effect?

Open in App
Solution

Tyndall effect is the scattering of light by particles. Particles of collides scatter light because their particles are big enough to do so but they cannot be seen with the naked eye as they are also equally small.
But Starch sol is a lyophilic sol. Therefore the sol (starch solution) particles are very tiny and more solvated. The refractive indices of dispersion medium (water) and dispersed phase (starch) are almost negligible.
Therefore, starch solution exhibit a very weak or almost no Tyndall effect.
