Human cells normally respire aerobically. However, during vigorous exercise, muscle cells have to work fast and therefore need more oxygen than what the respiratory system can supply. So, the muscle cells respond to the demand by respiring anaerobically (in the absence of oxygen). In this strategy, energy is still produced but in smaller amount for each molecule of glucose. Also glucose is not fully oxidised to carbon dioxide and water, rather it is broken down to lactic acid. The accumulation of lactic acid causes severe muscle ache.
