The DNA strand with 5’ 3’ polarity is called the lagging strand. The synthesis of the daughter strand does not occur continuously on this parental strand. Replication is discontinuous on this strand as DNA polymerase can synthesize strands only in 5’ 3’ direction. This leads to the formation of small fragments also known as Okazaki fragments.
Ligase helps in the joining of these fragments and forms a complete daughter DNA strand.
DNA polymerase is involved in the addition of dNTPs to the growing chains during DNA replication.
Helicase helps the double stranded DNA to unwind during DNA replication.
