The phase transition of solid state to liquid state on heating is called melting. The phase transition of liquid state to gas on heating is called vapourisation.

In solids, the particles are tightly packed. As the temperature increases then the kinetic energy (energy associated with the motion of particles) increases. Due to this the force of attraction between the particles reduces and interparticle distance (distance between the particles) increases and solids start to convert into liquids.
