Okazaki et al, (1968) suggested that during DNA replication only one strand shows a continuous replication (leading strand), while other strand (lagging strand) replicates in a discontinuous manner, i.e. synthesises short fragments called Okazaki fragments in $5^{\prime }\to 3^{\prime }$ direction (of new strand).
