Question

during transportation of sugar in phloem when due to osmosis water from xylem comes into the phloem , wouldn't the sugar also go in xylem? what happens to that sugar?

Solution

Dear Student,

Phloem sap consists of sugar and water whereas xylem sap consists of water, inorganic ions and organic chemicals. During transportation, the high concentration of sugar in phloem sap causes water to move from the xylem into the phloem due to osmosis. This results in the increase of water pressure inside the phloem which causes the sugar to move from source (high osmotic concentration and high water pressure) to sink (low osmotic concentration and low water pressure) through active transport.
