Each observation in a raw data is first multiplied by 3, then 6 is added. It is then divided by 3 and subsequently reduced by 6. Which of the following statements is true?
The new mean is 4 less than the original mean.
Let the observations be x1,x2…xn and mean be ¯x
⇒x1+x2+…+xnn=¯x
Each observation is first multiplied by 3 then 6 is added. It is then divided by 3 and reduced by 6 which gives a data:
3x1+63−6,3x2+63−6,…,3xn+63−6,
Here, 3x1+63−6=3x1+6−183=3x1−123=x1−4
Similarly, 3xn+63−6=xn−4
⇒ the observations can be written as: x1−4,x2−4,…xn−4
∴ New mean =x1−4+x2−4+…+xn−4n=¯x−4.
