Solution

The correct option is A 4.61 kg
Elizabeth buys some apples and oranges.

Weight of apples = 3.37 kg
Weight of oranges =1.24 kg

∴ Total weight of the purchse = (3.37 + 1.24) kg

We can use blocks, rods, and flats to represent hundredths, tenths and ones respectively, which are as follows:

Following this representation, 3.37 can be expressed as:

Similarly, 1.24 can be expressed as:

Now, to calculate 3.37 + 1.24, we write the decimals one below the other and add them as follows:

As we can see, the answer of the sum has 4 flats, 5 rods, and 11 blocks

But we can express 10 blocks as 1 rod.

So, 11 blocks can be expressed as:
11 blocks = (10 + 1) blocks
= 1 rod + 1 block

So, we observe:

Rearranging 11 blocks into 1 rod and 1 block, we get:

Counting the final number of flats, rods, and blocks, we get 4 flats, 6 rods, and 1 block.

∴ The total weight of the purchase
is $4.61 kg.
