Pit houses have been found in Burzahom, an archaeological site near Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. These houses, as the name suggests, were pits dug in the ground. They were built around 3000 BC. They were circular or oval shaped. Some of the deeper pits had steps and ladders to reach lower levels. These pits were probably covered with thatch roof. Findings of ash and charcoal suggest that these pits were inhabited.
