Question

why are liquids compressible but not solid

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student

Solids have a definite volume and shape, and its particles are tightly compact and have a crystalline lattice structure, because the particles are tightly compact, there is no space between the particles. So it is very tough nearly impossible to compress solid in normal conditions.
Unlike solids, liquid particles are in free-flight motion, their particles are far apart from each other, the molecules in the liquids are mobile and they can move freely, they possess shape of their container which is why it can be easily compressed in comparison to solids..
