The ultimate source of energy for all living organisms is solar radiation with the exception of deep ocean ecosystems. The flow of energy in the ecosystem is unidirectional because the energy lost as heat from the living organisms of a food chain cannot be reused by plants in photosynthesis. The energy which passes to the herbivores does not come back to the autotrophs. The energy that is captured by the autotrophs does not revert back to the Sun.
