Epidermis
Stratum corneum

Contains flattened dead cells made of keratin. This prevents invasion of disease causing microorganisms.

Granular layer
Contains two to three sub-layers of flattened cells which eventually give rise to stratum corneum.
Malpighian layer - contains melanin
  • Replaces worn-out cells of outer cornified layer
  • Melanin responsible for the skin tone and colour and prevent from the harmful effects of UV rays
