Question

Estimate the age of a rock which is found to contain 5×105 mL of helium at STP and 3×107 g of uranium. (T50 of 23892U is 4.51×109 yr and each 23892U is converted into 20682Pb
Plan 23892U20682Pb+6β+8α(helium)
We take the equation [[Pb][U]+1]=(2)y
where [Pb][U] is the molar ratio, y=tT50

Solution

The correct option is A 1.30×109 yr
Number of moles of He at STP
=5×10522400 mol
[Pb]=18[He]=5×1058×22400 mol
=2.79×1010 mol
[U]=3×107238=12.6×1010 mol
[2.79×101012.6×1010+1]=(2)y
1.2214=(2)y
taking log, we have y=0.2886
but y=totalnumberofhalflife=tT50
t=y×T50
=0.2886×4.5×109
=1.30×109 yr
