Ethane burns in oxygen to form CO2 and H2O according to the equation: 2C2H6+7O2→4CO2+6H2O. If 1250cc of oxygen is burnt with 300cc of ethane. Calculate: (i) the volume of CO2 formed. (ii) the volume of unused O2.

Solution
Molecular weight of ethane is 30 g/mol and of CO2 is 44 g/mol, O2 is 32 g/mol
(i) In the reaction, the number of moles of CO2 formed is twice as that of ethane, therefore volume will be twice as well
300 cc of ethane will burn to give 600 cc CO2
(ii) In the reaction, the number of moles of O2 used are 3.5 times as that of ethane, therefore volume will be 3.5 times as well.
To burn 300 cc of ethane amount of oxygen required is 300×3.5=1050cc. Unused oxygen is:
