Acid-catalyzed method of preparing symmetrical ethers from primary alcohols is temperature dependence.
If dehydration of alcohol takes place at 443 K, an E2 elimination takes place and instead of ether, an alkene is obtained.
If dehydration of alcohol takes place at 413 K, then ether is formed. Dehydration of alcohols is useful only for the preparation for symmetrical ethers.​
