Question

Ethylene glycol is used as an antifreeze agent. Calculate the amount of ethylene glycol to be added to 4 kg of water to prevent it from freezing at 6C.(Kf for H2O=1.85 K mole1kg)

Open in App
Solution

Depression in freezing point Tf=1000×Kf×ωW×M
In the given case W=4 Kg=4000 g.
Kf=1.85
Tf=0(6)=6C
M of ethylene glycol CH2OHCH2OH=62
amount of ethylene glycol required,
ω=M×W×Tf1000×Kf

=62×4000×61000×1.85=804.32 g
