Placenta is a structural and functional connection between the uterine wall and the foetus.


Placenta act as endocrine gland:

Placenta acts as an endocrine gland by secreting hormones like estrogens, hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), human placental lactogen (hPL), progesterone, estrogens etc.


Functions of Placenta:

Placenta performs a number of functions as follows:
  • Nutrients pass from the maternal blood to the foetus through placenta
  • Excretory products pass from the foetal blood into the maternal blood through the placenta.
  • It acts as an ultrafilter and allows the entry of antibodies against certain diseases like measles, diphtheria etc.
