Question

Except nitrogen , all the 15 group element is allotropy?what is the meaning of allotropy ??

Solution

Nitrogen does not show allotropy because of its small size and high electronegativity. The single N-N bond is weaker than P-P bond because of high inter electronic repulsions among non-bonding electrons due to the small bond distance.

OR

The factors which favour allotropyin an element are:

  1. Catenation i.e. self linking property of an atom.
  2. Ability to show variable oxidation states.

Nitogen has atomic number 7 and its electronic configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p3. This clearly indicates that nitrogen has stable half filled electronic configuration, because of which it is quite inert. More importantly, it is small in size and does not have vacant orbitals to expand its valency. As a result, it neither shows catenation, nor exhibits variable oxidation states. Therefore it does not shows allotropy.

Allotropy -- the existence of an element in two or more physical forms. The most common elements having this property are carbon, sulphur, and phosphorus
